Can This 9-Year Plan Beat Forever Chemicals?

Utility partners with Calgon Carbon on reusable filtration systems after EPA sets strict PFAS limits in drinking water.

Millions of Americans could soon have safer drinking water as American Water launches an ambitious nine-year cleanup effort targeting toxic PFAS chemicals. The company has partnered with Calgon Carbon to install advanced filtration systems across ten states.

The deal spans from California to West Virginia and ranks among the largest PFAS treatment programs in the country. It follows the Environmental Protection Agency's recent crackdown, setting strict new limits on six PFAS compounds in drinking water. While many utilities are scrambling to comply, American Water is taking a head start. By securing long-term filtration supplies and services, the company is aiming to avoid future supply shortages and regulatory headaches.

A key feature of the plan is Calgon Carbon's reactivation process. Instead of discarding used activated carbon, the material will be treated and reused, cutting down both operational costs and environmental waste. It is a rare circular solution in a field often criticized for one-time use products.

More than 50 American Water sites are set for these upgrades, combining proven carbon filtration with modern sustainability goals. "This goes beyond basic compliance," said a source familiar with the agreement. "It is about creating resilient, forward-looking water systems."

Though some new technologies are entering the market, carbon filtration remains the most trusted method to remove PFAS. The reactivation process has drawn some scrutiny over emissions, but regulators and suppliers are stepping up oversight to address those concerns.

With federal rules tightening, American Water's early action could serve as a blueprint for others. By blending urgency with innovation, the company hopes to deliver cleaner water to millions before problems escalate.
